The opioid epidemic plaguing the United States (and beyond) is also elevating the risk of injury to law enforcement and other first responders who may encounter fentanyl and highly potent fentanyl analogs. Law enforcement personnel responding to clandestine laboratory operations must be familiar with the synthetic routes of manufacture and the chemicals necessary to synthesize fentanyl and some of the highly potent fentanyl analogs.

This 8-hour course covers the risks and recommended protocols for handling fentanyl, fentanyl analogs, and other trending opioid drugs. It is highly recommended that all law enforcement personnel and other first responders who respond to clandestine laboratory operations receive training on the hazards of fentanyl synthesis and the various analogs being produced.

Course Topics:

  • Pharmacology
  • History of Illegal Fentanyl Operations
  • Fentanyl Analogs
  • Signs/Symptoms of Fentanyl Exposure & Use of Naloxone
  • Hazmat & Field Protocols
  • Threats as an Incapacitating/Killing Agent
  • Establishing Site Control & Decon Corridor
  • Field Testing for Fentanyl & Analogs: Color Tests, Raman, FTIR & GC/MS Instruments
  • Fentanyl Decontamination
  • New Toxic Synthetic Opioids from China

Attendees will gain a better understanding of the hazards associated with fentanyl synthesis and the handling of some highly potent fentanyl analogs. Students will also receive training on the recommended protocols and PPE needed for safely managing these highly toxic clandestine operations as well as guidance on the use of naloxone and field-testing equipment.
